Saint Venanzo

The village of San Venanzo lies at the foot of Mount Peglia, just 40 km from Orvieto, but the border with the territory of the city of Perugia Marsciano.

The first signs of human presence in this place can be traced back to the Paleolithicand and from this time the attendance has continued to this day. The testimonies of the variousphases of settlement at St. Venanzo are on display at the Archaeological Museum of Perugia.

Around the newspaper dedicated to the town's patron saint, San Venancio,goes back to the establishment of the center of the country occurred in the years prior to the year 1000. The village was owned by Monaldeschi family and suffered the conflicts that took place between the different branches of this family, that at the beginning of the Renaissance fractionation into four large families.

of the ancient castle of San Venanzo remains only fragments and in the nineteenth century they were incorporated into the construction of Villa Faina, a building just wanted by the noblefamily of Conti Faina in Orvieto and now of the town.

 

Valuables memorials in St. Venanzo are the remains of the First Church of San Venancio, still visible in the public park, and the frescoes of the sixteenth century Madonna of the Liberator, which are found in the church.

San Venanzo is not only interesting from the standpoint of historical and artistic, but also in terms of nature and geology. The village and its surrounding area arises, in fact,where once were three little active volcanoes. The presence of volcanic activity is evident by the presence of a unique mineral called venanzite. To make known to the public this uniqueness of St. Venanzo in recent years has been home to the Museum of Volcanology, which are explained in all stages of the eruptions and the geological history of the place.

The territory of San Venanzo is dotted with small and very picturesque villages: SanVito in Monte (with sources of mineral waters), Civitella dei Conti, Collelungo (with the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Light), Poggio Kite, Pornello, Rotecastello. Finally, there is Ospedaletto of great interest for nature lovers thanks to the pine forests, theme parksand wildlife reserves in a single word "Park of the Seven Brothers, " equipped forpicnics and outdoor shows, with camper service and the documentation centernaturalistic "Documentation Centre Flora and Fauna of Mount Peglia.
