Parrano owes its name to "Parra" a Latin name for 'Hoopoe bird" with the colorful crest living in the surrounding woods. The village is a picturesque and well preserved medieval urban settlement, nestled in the green heart of the woods, which is reached via a road that offers breathtaking views. Parrano still seems to live in a timeless atmosphere. The castle of the eleventh century, is the center of the village and still intact walls, arches and plazas. The Castrum Parrani was erected in 1000 under the rule of Orvieto and only in the fifteenth century became part of the Papal States.
Near the village are the Tane del Diavolo deepest gorges and caves very interesting, where were found relics from the Paleolithic and Bronze Age to the Etruscan and Roman Age. Of particular importance is the support of an Etruscan tomb and an old statute of the 1500, significant local history.
